What is the Bredesen Protocol?

The Bredesen Protocol is a personalized approach to cognitive health developed by Dr. Dale Bredesen and offered through Apollo Health’s ReCODE and PreCODE programs. It brings health history, selected biomarkers, and everyday habits into a coordinated discussion about brain health.

Rather than a single medicine or supplement, it is a framework for considering several potential contributors together. My role is to help you understand the findings, weigh the evidence, and build an individualized plan alongside appropriate medical care.

ReCODE and PreCODE: which program fits?

No cognitive symptoms

PreCODE: brain health & risk reduction.

Apollo Health designs PreCODE for people without cognitive symptoms who want to take an active role in brain health. Family history or concerns about future cognitive health may prompt this conversation. The focus is reviewing relevant risks and building sustainable habits; no program can guarantee that dementia will be prevented.

Existing cognitive concerns

ReCODE: a personalized response to cognitive change.

ReCODE is intended for people experiencing cognitive decline, including concerns associated with mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer’s disease. Assessment establishes the diagnosis and care needs before deciding whether this approach fits. It complements medical evaluation and ongoing care; it does not replace a dementia assessment.

Start with a cognitive health assessment.

Memory, concentration, and mental clarity can change for many reasons. We begin with your experience and how it affects daily life, rather than assuming every symptom reflects Alzheimer’s disease.

  • Your history and priorities. Symptoms, timeline, family history, previous diagnoses, daily functioning, and observations from a partner or family member when you wish to include them.
  • A review of potential contributors. Medication effects, sleep, mood, nutrition, alcohol use, metabolic health, and vascular risks.
  • Clinically appropriate investigations. Conventional testing may include blood glucose or HbA1c, lipids, thyroid function, vitamin B12, and other tests selected from your assessment. Additional investigations need a clinical reason.
  • Cognitive assessment and referral. Reviewing previous cognitive testing or arranging appropriate assessment, imaging, or specialist input through your care team when indicated.

Genetic testing, including APOE testing, is an individual decision. We discuss what it can and cannot predict, privacy, and whether the result would change your care. A gene result alone does not diagnose Alzheimer’s disease.

A practical plan for brain health.

The Bredesen approach considers several areas of health together. We adapt recommendations to your medical needs, daily demands, and capacity for change.

  • Clinical nutrition. A sustainable eating pattern, adequate nourishment, and individualized discussion of Apollo Health’s KetoFLEX 12/3 framework when appropriate. Restrictive diets or fasting are not suitable for everyone.
  • Movement and strength. Activities matched to your abilities, preferences, and physical health.
  • Sleep and recovery. Sleep routines and assessment of concerns such as possible sleep apnea.
  • Metabolic and cardiovascular health. Attention to clinically relevant blood pressure, glucose, and lipid findings with your treating clinicians.
  • Stress, connection, and cognitive activity. Practical support for routines, social engagement, and activities that matter to you.
  • Targeted treatment. Addressing identified conditions or deficiencies, with medication and supplement review where indicated. Recommendations are assessed for interactions, risks, and ongoing need.

We prioritize manageable steps, then revisit what is helping. A complex plan is useful only if it can become part of your life.

Care that evolves with you.

I completed additional training in the Bredesen Protocol: ReCODE / PreCODE in 2026. My approach connects this framework with naturopathic primary care, clinical nutrition, and ongoing follow-up at Healthcode Regenerative in Vancouver.

We agree on priorities and how to review them over time. Depending on your circumstances, that may include symptoms, daily function, cognitive assessment results, relevant laboratory findings, and feedback from your care partner. Response varies, and we adjust the plan when your needs change.

With your permission, I collaborate with your family physician, neurologist, and other practitioners. You do not have to choose between an ND and an MD. Learn about primary care and health optimization ↗

What does the research show?

A 2022 proof-of-concept study followed 25 people with mild cognitive impairment or dementia through a nine-month personalized program and reported improvements on cognitive measures.

The EVANTHEA randomized trial subsequently compared a personalized approach with standard care. As of this page’s November 2026 review, the trial team describes its results as a preprint that has not yet undergone peer review.

We discuss the potential value, uncertainty, cost, and effort before deciding what belongs in your care. Cognitive improvement and prevention cannot be promised.

Common questions.

Is PreCODE appropriate if I already have memory symptoms?

PreCODE is designed for people without symptoms. If memory or daily functioning has changed, start with medical assessment. ReCODE may be a topic to discuss after your clinical picture is understood.

Do I need an Alzheimer’s diagnosis to discuss brain health?

No. You can seek a preventive brain health discussion without a diagnosis. Existing symptoms require assessment to identify possible causes and decide on next steps.

Can I follow ReCODE or PreCODE in Vancouver?

We can discuss these approaches at Healthcode Regenerative in Vancouver and review how local testing and clinical care would be arranged.

Are Apollo Health membership and laboratory fees included?

We review clinic visits, testing, optional Apollo Health membership or reporting, and any recommended products separately before you commit. Availability and costs depend on your plan. An Apollo Health subscription does not include this clinic’s appointments.

Can a family member or care partner take part?

Yes, with your permission. A care partner can help describe changes, support daily routines, and participate in follow-up while keeping your preferences central.

Discuss your brain health priorities.

Whether you want to invest in long-term cognitive health or understand changes you have noticed, begin with a conversation about your goals and care needs. Appointments are offered with Dr. Jeff Martineau, ND at Healthcode Regenerative in Vancouver.
